Lawn-mower prices up 5% over the past year, according to data from RE/MAX

Mower prices have skyrocketed across the country, according a new report from RE-MAX, a company that helps customers buy lawnmowers.
The lawn-mowers category has seen the steepest increase over the last year, with a jump of more than 55% for the first quarter of 2017, RE-MAX said.
The RE- MAX report said the price increase is due to several factors.
The lawn mower market is saturated and in need of a complete refresh, said John Parnell, a senior analyst with RE-MIX.
“Consumers are going to be more likely to choose one of the older models,” Parnel said.
RE-MAXX also noted the lawn mowing category has experienced “disappointing market growth in the past two years.”
The REMAX report comes as lawn-care companies have begun to look for ways to reduce costs, especially in the Midwest and Northeast.
While lawn-service companies have been trying to find ways to cut costs by increasing the number of lawn chairs they can offer, the company that makes the chairs has not been able to do that, Parnett said.
Re-MAX said its lawn- mower survey, which asked lawn-owners to fill out a survey about their lawn-growing experiences, found that lawn- service companies were also finding it harder to attract customers in the states where the lawns are growing.
The number of mowing trips to lawns has decreased for the past four years, according the survey.
But RE-MASX said that number has remained flat in the years since the recession, with only a small uptick in the number.
It said there was a lot of variation across the U.S. for how much people are spending on lawns, from the low of $25 to the high of $100.
“It’s a lot cheaper to grow a lawn now than it was 20 years ago,” said Parnells.
“You’re getting a lot more bang for your buck.
So it’s a pretty good investment.”
